Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finnish: Lahden ammattikorkeakoulu) is an institution of higher professional education, formerly known as Lahti Polytechnic in Lahti, Finland. Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LUAS) is a large, multidisciplinary higher education institution. The Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at LUAS have been designed to respond to the demands and development needs of business and industry. Active collaboration with business, industry and other organisation are an integral part of studies.

LUAS is located in Southern Finland, 100 km from the capital Helsinki. It is a regional centre of expertise with over 5,000 students and approximately 250 full-time teaching staff. Annually LUAS employs about 70 part-time teachers from other academic institutions, business and industry.

Organisation

Lahti University of Applied Sciences is owned by the municipalities of the Lahti region through the Lahti Region Educational Consortium. Lahti University of Applied Sciences is an independent commercial undertaking within the Consortium, and it is governed by the Board of Lahti University of Applied Sciences, which is nominated by the Consortium except for the representatives of the personnel and the students.

The head of Lahti University of Applied Sciences is president, Dr Risto Ilomäki. The president is assisted in management by the Management Group and in implementation by the president's office.

The instruction is given at the Faculties. Within the Faculties there are in many cases Departments, which are responsible for individual degree programmes and main subjects. The head of a Department is normally a Principal Lecturer.

Fields of Study

Lahti University of Applied Sciences operates in the fields of business, design and communication, fine arts, music, hospitality management, social and health care, technology and engineering and technology. LUAS has over 20 degree programmes with over 40 specialisation lines.

Studies in English

Two Bachelor's degree programmes and one Master's degree programme are taught entirely in English. In addition, individual study modules and courses are available in English at faculties. Many courses, where instruction is not formally available in English, can be negotiated between the examiner and the student, especially in areas of art, design and music.
